Every day Karen Davenport looked in the mirror was another day of disappointment...in her looks, that is. She had no idea how hard a pregnancy would be on her body! But those post-pregnancy weeks brought on tremendous changes in her body and her face. She almost didn't recognize herself one morning. Bags under her eyes and a sallow complexion from sleepless nights overshadowed her once rosy pregnancy glow. And she had odd bulges and swellings on her body that seemed as if they would never normalize. And now, just three weeks after her adorable baby girl was born, without any complications whatsoever, the 29 year-old new mom from Boston, Massachusetts, noticed yet another disturbing loss...hair loss. Was it her imagination or was her part wider than it had ever been? She could see her scalp right through her hair for a half-inch on either side - and her ponytail was so thin all of a sudden. She knew the bags under eyes would soon improve once her little baby was past the infant stage - but this new hair thinning was troubling...she needed to investigate hair loss treatments and fast!
Once she got in to see her OB-GYN, he explained to her that post-pregnancy hair loss is a common type of traumatic hair loss that can happen any time from one to six months after a physical trauma or stressful event or hormonal change, as in giving birth. Called, Telogen Effluvium, hair follicles get shocked by the trauma into a resting phase which causes the hairs to fall out and not grow back. Usually, hair loss treatment is not required because pregnancy-related hair loss is reversible once the hormonal and physical stress has subsided, although some people can be genetically predisposed to hair loss and thinning caused by pregnancy and birth. But, her doctor did say there were several hair loss treatmentoptions that were approved to help jump-start her hair growth. He referred her to a few hair loss treatment specialists in her neighborhood and after consulting with them, Karen decided on laser hair therapy as a hair loss treatment for her post-pregnancy hair thinning.
She chose laser hair therapy for several reasons. As a hair loss treatments, laser hair therapy required no medication or drugs either topically, like Rogaine, or cortisones or any medication of any kind, because after all, she was still breast-feeding and was concerned about taking any medications that could be passed through breast milk. She also found out from the hair loss treatment specialist that she could get a device called a laser comb and administer her laser hair therapy to herself, privately, at home. This way she wouldn't have to leave the baby or schedule appointments at the hair loss treatment clinic, which was a big concern for her. Thirdly, the laser comb was FDA-approved as a hair loss treatment, with especially great results in a temporary situation like hers. Once her hair started to grow back and her hormones were back in balance, her doctor said she would not likely continue to have a hair thinning or hair loss problem, so laser hair therapy was ideal for Karen. And if she did continue to have the problem, she could continue to work with her hair loss treatment specialist to adjust her laser hair therapy to meet her needs. Right now, she was just using the laser comb at-home about three times per week for about 20 minutes per session and it was easy enough to fit it into her schedule. But it was also one less thing to worry about! Things were definitely looking up for Karen just one month later: She could already feel fuzz growing in the sparse patches on her head, her baby was smiling all the time now and because she was sleeping almost through the night, Karen could finally get some sleep!
